Information for Beginning/Basic Skills Skaters

Beginning skaters are in the club's "Basic Skills" group which is part of the U.S. Figure Skating "Learn-to-Skate" program. Basic Skills skaters are given weekly instruction on Sunday and/or Monday and have the opportunity to participate in the club's annual ice show in March.

Basic Skills instruction is provided at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon or at 6:30 on Monday evening.

The lesson cost for Basic Skills skaters includes instruction and ice charges for the entire session. On Sundays, skaters will recieve 40 minutes of group instruction from our professional coaches and 20 minutes of group practice time with an advanced member of our club. On Mondays, skaters will recieve 30 minutes of professional group instruction and will have the option of an additional 30 minutes of group practice time with an advanced skater.

Skaters wil have the opportunity to be tested each session by the club's professional staff in order to progress through the levels of the Learn-to-Skate program. Skaters will receive a testing booklet which details each level of the program and allows the skater to track his/her progress. When a skater has successfully completed the Basic Skills levels 1-6, she or he is part of the club's Basic Skills II group.

How to Dress For Figure Skating Practice
Beginning skaters should dress for warmth and movement on the ice. Layering a jacket over a sweater or sweatshirt is preferrable to a bulky, heavy coat and layers can be removed as the skater warms up. Gloves or mittens are a good idea. Hats and helmets are optional. Pants or legging should allow for movement. If possible, stay away from baggy sweatpants and baggy clothing in general as well as blue jeans. Skating tights and dresses are optional for beginning skaters because they may not provide enough warmth.

  • Have your blades sharpened regularly (after about 15-30 hours of skating).
